Start with problems, not gadgets

A new house creates a strong urge to buy everything at once. Resist it. Cover water shutoffs, loose hardware, hanging, measuring, basic electrical checks, cleanup, and personal safety first. Specialty tools can wait until a real project justifies them.

The core kit

Choose dependable mid-grade tools that are comfortable in your hand and easy to replace locally.

• Claw hammer and multi-bit screwdriver
• 25-foot tape, level, utility knife, and stud finder
• Adjustable wrench, pliers, and basic socket set
• Cordless drill/driver with common bits
• Voltage tester, flashlight, and headlamp
• Safety glasses, gloves, masks, and hearing protection

Prevent expensive damage

A labeled water shutoff key and wet/dry vacuum are less exciting than a new drill, but can save thousands when a supply line breaks. Locate the main water, electrical disconnect, gas shutoff, HVAC filters, and sewer cleanout before an emergency.
